Orms are founding partners of The London School of Architecture and have participated in running a Design Think Thank (DTT) at the school since its inception.
Our 2020 DTT was titled Purpose & Pleasure. By exploring the Night-Time economy and how people occupy both day and night it realised that our current way of living and our understanding of the 24-hour city was out of sync with our natural cycles. The Think Tank came to the realisation that there was a need for realignment.
Using Hackney Central as a test bed, Purpose & Pleasure propose Circadian Commons. The Commons is a new metropolitan typology ingrained in Hackney’s fabric. It is designed to promote a more balanced 24/7 lifestyle that respects nature and its life cycles. Reinterpreting the historic pleasure gardens, it combines work, leisure, and education to create an inclusive park that is open 24/7, 365 days a year. This project hopes to realign day and night, city and wilderness, purpose and pleasure.
