A high quality workspace for a specialist fit-out company in central London.
ISG is an international construction services company, specialising in fit-out and refurbishment projects. So when the company relocated its London offices to a single central base in Aldgate, it was an opportunity to create a built manifestation and exhibition of the successful ISG brand and its considerable staff expertise – and for Orms to work closely with the client-contractor on unique product details throughout! This is an office that hosts many visitors every day, and the design therefore needed to ensure a great experience for both workers and guests – however fleeting their visit – to reinforce ISG’s reputation for high quality service.
Orms’ design begins with the reception space which mirrors that of a boutique hotel foyer, allowing traffic to flow without congestion and accommodating a multitude of activities – waiting, informal meetings, coffee breaks and celebratory gatherings. The reception forms part of a huge cruciform which anchors the entire workspace: a timber ‘boardwalk’ runs north-south to give the primary circulation and social space, while a glowing glass pavilion runs east-west to enclose the meeting room suites. Lightboxes puncture the ceiling at key points to break down the flat plane, creating the illusion of natural light by changing colour temperature throughout the day.
