Following our refurbishment of 1+2 Stephen Street for Derwent London, The Office Group took three floors at number 2 and appointed Orms to create a new location for their design-led flexible offices. The challenge was to take large deep plan floor plates and turn them into bright, comfortable, versatile spaces that would engender a sense of community.
The brief was to create something wonderful. A simple layout was devised to keep the collective spaces at the heart of the plan with a sensual palette of industrial sophistication; waxed black steel, white washed oak, perforated copper mesh and pastel hues with art pieces by Acrylicize. The use of metals in the both the interior and shell and core scheme brings unity to the two separate projects.
A rich series of spaces are placed adjacent each other to create a suite of diverse working and socialising environments. Veiled views and glimpses into overlapping spaces heighten the awareness of surrounding life and activity. Copper mesh screens, simple glazed partitions, tactile light fittings and open structure fabrics are layered in various configurations to create degrees of transparencies that set up a dynamic play across the communal spaces.
2 Stephen Street offers tenants both private office and communal space. The buildings are managed more like hotels than a traditional office, with a high level of service and experience for ‘guests’. This ‘third space’ creates opportunities for meeting other members and therefore allowing collaboration amongst businesses.
